sorry if in their website there isn’t any demo direct download. contact Newtek and they will send you a demo - limited to 400 points in modelling - and try it out. Maya, taking into account that its not the cheaper app out there. So, my final opinion is : use what you are experienced with.

Maya is also good for huge animation work, and its MEL scripting capabilities make of it a fantastic app. lets say that in Lw i find modelling more pleasant and fast, but an experienced Maya user could say the opposite. you can model with poly to poly rather than use box modelling… and so on. for example you could use nurbs and convert them to subpatch. but my opinion is it depends from the methods you use for modelling as well. Maya, as i see from my POV, is a good app, but modelling and selection system slows you down a bit. however, very good animation can be done in Lw as well. (but it will be different in 9.0)Īnimation could be better because of IK solver. rigging needs a bit of work, mainly because you have to paint weight maps in modeler rather than in layout, for now. Lw has also unlimited rendering nodes.Ĭonsidered as a whole, Lw is a good package as has been said,, for modelling and rendering.

in lw 9.0 release you will have edges, ngons and a subpatch algorithm more similar to catmull clark one, plus news on rendering, camera lenses, reworked UI. u’ll model very fast especially for organics in subdivision surfaces, and obviously inorganics too. I think this deal is on until Lightwave 9 ships in Oct or Nov, so no rush

Oh and don’t forget Newtek has a great deal on right now where if u buy Lightwave 8 u get a free upgrade to 8.5 and 9.0 when they are released and u also get Vue Infinite 5 an $800 scenery program for free. These are just my thoughts and the decision I made when I was faced with the Maya or Lightwave dilema. Lightwave 3D 8 Texturing(by one of CGtalks Forum admin Leigh van der Byl) If you are big into character animation and want even more rigging and animation tools than Lightwave or Maya have then look into getting Messiah Animate $249.99 as a plugin to Lightwave. If your looking for Lightwave tutorials and support there are plenty of community forums including the one here on CGTalk and many books u can get. With Lightwave 9.0 there will be many huge improvements to look forward to. I have used Lightwave since version 6.0 and have always been very pleased with it. I cant deny I enjoyed working with it in school almost as much as I enjoyed Lightwave. So $2000.00 for Maya Complete isnt really that bad of a price if u can afford it but just remember that if u get Maya u will always need to put money aside to keep it current. Maya has a few perks of its own though such as Paint fx(my favorite maya tool) and if u plan on working for very large studios chances are pretty good that u will be using Maya more than Lightwave mainly because of MEL Script in Maya. Lightwave has been around for a good 15 years now, longer than any other of the 3d apps currently on the market(that I know of anyway). Lightwave has also always had a great render engine without the need for adding Mental Ray. Lightwave also has unlimited render nodes to render across networks on as many computers as u desire. I have used both Maya and Lightwave extensively in the past but only Lightwave these days? Why? because I was in a similair situation as u I used Maya and Lightwave in school but when it came down to it I got Lightwave because it has a great price tag $795.00 and on top of that most upgrades are free unlike Maya usually costing well over $1000.00 per year to keep it current.

in the right hands great things can be done with both, but they have strengths and weaknesses. " it depends on what you use the apps for- they’re just tools. plus i intend to get those plugins i mention to you which will make up for what complete dosen’t have. I am a student also and i bought the student version of maya 6 complete and when i am done with school i will stick with the complete version because right now thats what i can afford. I agree with you that unlimited is quite expensive. If so, I really dont agree with you on that at all.

(Unless you put every plug-in in the world)." if you aren’t going ot use those features then complete is goode enough.Īre you saying that maya complete is " darn complicated and ugly to get stuff done in. you could always buy syflex, realflow and shave which will make up for some of the features in unlimited.

Now, the only thing that turns me off about Maya is the price(only worth buying the Unlimited version anyways).
